James Holmes, accused of killing a dozen people at a midnight screening of “The Dark Knight Rises,” wants to know how the film ended.

“Did you see the movie?” a creepy-sounding Holmes asked a stunned jail worker during a bizarre exchange Tuesday. “How does it end?”

Holmes, his eyes glazed and his voice flat, repeated the question when the worker ignored him, according to another jail employee who witnessed the incident in the infirmary.

Holmes, a 24-year-old ex-honor student, “was trying to look like he was sincerely curious,” the witness recounted to the Daily News.

“Like he had no idea why there was anything wrong with what he was saying. It was sick … I think he’s trying real hard to act crazy.”

Holmes, 24, bought a ticket to the movie and watched the first half-hour before allegedly slipping outside to his car — and returning in full body armor to open fire on the unsuspecting moviegoers.

The jail worker was stunned by Holmes’ callous question about the movie now synonymous with his homicidal rampage.

“If he said that to me, it would have been real hard to resist smacking him,” the worker said.

Holmes remains in solitary confinement in the Arapahoe County Detention Center. He was moved to the infirmary Tuesday for his own protection, sources told The News.

Prison officials fitted him with a black plastic face guard to stop him from spitting on guards, and he wears a green bulletproof vest and ankle shackles.

Holmes was arrested with a four-weapon arsenal outside the Aurora, Colo., movie theater where he opened fire early Friday.

Twelve people were killed and another 58 injured before the shooting stopped inside the darkened theater at the movie multiplex. Among the dead was a 6-year-old girl.

Holmes, a transplanted Californian, appeared catatonic during a 12-minute courtroom appearance on Monday. He dropped out of graduate school shortly before the killing spree when he failed an oral exam.

Survivors of the mass shooting were cheered Tuesday when “Dark Knight” star Christian Bale spent about 2 1/2 hours visiting patients at a Colorado hospital.

He posed for photos after deciding to make the trip with his wife, and made a stop at the memorial opposite the Century 16 theater.
