Teacher Gives Sexist Homework To First Grader, Badass Mom Rewrites It

Lynne Polvino, a working mother who lives with her family in the borough of Queens, New York City, has got people talking on social media.

Recently, Polvino’s 6-year-old daughter, Hazel, returned from school with homework. After seeing the work given to the first-grader, Polvino was shocked and angry because it was full of sexism and misogyny. “I was already feeling pretty frazzled, and when I read the assignment, I almost lost it,” Polvino said.

The assignment given to Hazel featured a story called “Back to Work” and asked Hazel to choose words from the word bank to complete the narrative. It suggested that it is a mother’s duty to stay at home and take care of the kids.

Although Polvino loves taking care of her kids, she considered the assignment to be misogynist saying chores in the home is not the sole responsibility of a woman.

Outraged by the story, Polvino decided to rewrite the entire text to reflect the kind of world I want to live in, the kind of world I want my kids to live in when they’re old enough to have jobs and families.”

After rewriting the text, Polvino emailed the teacher to express her dissatisfaction about the assignment. The teacher candidly agreed the assignment was outdated, and promised she would review it.

Below is the original work given to Hazel, and what Polvino rewrote.

People on social media praised Polvino for what she did. The comments on Facebook overwhelmingly supported Polvino for telling the teacher that she is contributing to sexism and misogyny by poisoning the minds of the kids with such an assignment.
