Politico was called out over a botched Trump transcript

Chris Castano

So, Politico released a transcript of a press conference that President Donald Trump gave in which he defended the alt-right and white supremacists after they were involved in the violence that broke out in Charlottesville over the weekend. In Politico’s transcript, Trump seems to describe himself as being a part of the two groups by collectively referring to those three entities as “us.” Audio of Trump’s remarks, however, doesn’t corroborate Politico’s transcript. And people are calling the news organization out.

At Tuesday’s press conference, Trump ignored multiple photos, videos and accounts of white supremacists and nationalists showing up armed and ready to fight in Charlottesville, instead saying that the violence perpetrated over the weekend was committed by many on both sides. Trump questioned why the media hadn’t paid more attention to the violence stemming from those on the left.

According to a transcript of the conference created by Federal News Service, Trump said, “OK, what about the alt-left that came charging them? Excuse me. What about the alt-left that came charging at the- as you say, the alt-right? Do they have any semblance of guilt?” The White House’s official transcript of the conference has Trump saying roughly the same thing.

Politico’s transcript read only slightly, but also very, differently:

“Okay, what about the alt-left that came charging at us – excuse me- what about the alt-left that came charging at the, as you say, the alt right? Do they have any semblance of guilt?”

Initially, that reported use of the word “us” made people angry with the president.
