Trump offered to sell ‘highly sophisticated’ military gear to South Korea and Japan

President Trump on Tuesday tweeted that he is allowing Japan and South Korea to buy “highly sophisticated military equipment” from the U.S.

Trump’s tweet neither specified what equipment he was referencing nor the terms of any potential sale between the U.S. and the other two nations.

Japan and South Korea close American allies that are becoming increasingly alarmed by recent developments involving their neighbor North Korea.

North Korea said Sunday that it had successfully tested a miniaturized hydrogen bomb that would fit on an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).

Pyongyang has long sought nuclear weapons, and Sunday’s reported test would mark its sixth nuclear experiment while seeking the devastating arms.

A South Korean lawmaker says North Korea is believed to be moving an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), according to CNN.

The politician told CNN Tuesday that it remains unclear when the movement was detected, what the projectile’s direction was, and how it was being transported.

CNN reported that the lawmaker on Monday attended a briefing by South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) about North Korea.

Lawmaker Kim Byung-kee on Monday told reporters that the NIS said North Korea may test-fire an ICBM towards the north Pacific Ocean at a lower angle than other recent tests.

North Korea test-fired two long-range missiles in July and in August it launched an intermediate-ranged version over Japan.

The missiles in the July tests were lofted, according to CNN, meaning they flew higher but not quite as far as possible.

The Daily Express on Tuesday reported that North Korea had threatened President Trump in a statement through its Korean People’s Army.

“It is time for the war hawks of the US to acknowledge again that its whole mainland and the operational area in the Pacific are within the annihilating and merciless nuclear fist of the powerful Paektusan revolutionary army,” it said.

“If they persist on extremely dangerous war drills around the Korean peninsula and provoke a nuclear war on this land, the powerful Paektusan revolutionary army will annihilate the source of aggression and evil on the earth with the nuclear strategic force consolidated with the great line of simultaneously developing the two fronts.”

North Korea said Sunday that it had successfully tested a miniaturized hydrogen bomb that would fit on an ICBM.

The reported operation would mark North Korea’s sixth nuclear test, and the first since Trump’s inauguration in January.

Trump vowed last month that North Korea would face “fire and fury” if it dared threaten the U.S. or its allies with nuclear weapons or other arms.
