This is absolutely shocking, heartbreaking, and horrific. A 27-year-old Belgian woman is arrested for cooking her two-year-old daughter alive on a charcoal grill.
Police were called after neighbors said they heard a girl screaming while smoke came out from the garage of the home where the woman was staying.
When they arrived, officers found the mother, who is reported to be of African descent, cooking the body of her littler girl on a charcoal grill, with the remains almost fully burned. They suspect the mother murdered her child as part of a suicide bid.
While the police are now investigating whether she cooked her daughter alive or if she killed her first and then tried to burn her body, the mother allegedly told officers when they arrested her: “We both had to burn. That was the only way we could go to heaven together.”
She also stated that the only way for a person’s soul to go to heaven was for their body to be cremated.
According to reports, the woman had apparently been depressed for quite a while after going through a bitter divorce. She was living in her mother’s house, but her mother was reportedly not home at the time the heinous crime was committed.
An autopsy on the young girl has already been performed; however, the prosecutor’s office of Halle-Vilvoorde has yet to make the results public.
Psychiatrist Hans Hellebuyck says if the mother really did say she started the fire for her daughter to get into heaven, it could definitely be a sign that psychiatric problems exist.
“If the woman made such remarks and truly meant them, it is possible that she is mentally ill. I am not saying it is like that, but it is something which has to be taken into account.”
