In a series of revealing tweets on his social media account, famous actor Terry Crews decried the destructive effect of the “pimp culture” in the black community.
What is “pimp culture”?
Crews identified it as the practice of sexual predators abusing young men and women who are then pressured to keep quiet about the abuse or be called promiscuous. He claims that some in the black community defend and praise the practice or don’t want to face up to the problem.
Here’s what he wrote:
“Being ‘turned out’ means the girl or boy has accepted their own objectification [therefore] the predator can abuse them as he or she sees fit,” he added. “Helpless, the girl or boy becomes promiscuous/acts out violently/or withdraws entirely- shunned by the community [for] bein ‘born like that.’”
“When they don’t, the victim is called a liar,” he continued. “When they do- the predator parades the victim’s anger/ promiscuity and is labeled a ‘ho’.”
“Prison is full of black ppl who’ve simply retaliated against their abuser, choosing prison over the ‘shame’ of revealing what happened,” he added.
“How can you defeat what’s never discussed? You can’t. A lot of Black men and women are “turned out” and don’t realize it.”
Why is he talking about this now?
The popular actor recently revealed that he had been sexually harassed by a producer in Hollywood, and despite being very physically imposing himself, he felt ashamed and kept quiet for fear of losing professional opportunities.
