Up, up and away! A man used helium balloons to take flight

A British man reached heights of 8,000 feet and traveled more than 15 miles all while being strapped into a chair held by helium balloons.

Tom Morgan used 100 colorful balloons to travel across the skies in South Africa, according to CBS News.

The 38-year-old runs The Adventurists, an adventure company based in Bristol, England. He is planning to set up the first-ever competitive helium balloon race in Africa.

Morgan initially chose Botswana for his original balloon test trials but after several failed attempts and inclement weather, he relocated to Johannesburg, South Africa. Morgan spent two days inflating the helium balloons.

“(In Botswana) there’s lots of open space. And it’s in the middle of a continent, so when the wind blows, we won’t land in the sea and die,” Morgan said.

The balloons took him toward the inversion layer of the atmosphere, where temperatures drop, Morgan told BBC News.

“I had to keep my cool and start gradually cutting the balloons,” he said.

After floating for two hours, Morgan lowered himself back down, and his teammates greeted him on the ground.

“We weren’t even sure Tom would come back alive. We didn’t think he was going to manage it,” Matthew Dickens, event manager for The Adventurists, told CBS News. “But yeah, he got there in the end.”
