The mystery of the brutal killing of John F. Kennedy keeps deepening. In 1964, the Warren Commission, established to investigate the assassination, concluded that JFK was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald, that Oswald acted entirely alone, and that there was no evidence of a conspiracy, foreign or domestic. But the Commission’s findings proved controversial and challenged by later studies.
In 1992, Congress approved, and former President George H.W. Bush signed, the JFK Assassination Records Collection Act. The act mandated the disclosure of all assassination-related records no later than 25 years after its signing. The deadline expired on October 26, 2017.
President Trump had initially told the public he was ready to declassify all assassination-related documents; however, he changed his mind and withheld some of the documents at the last minute, citing national security and international diplomacy concerns. Many observers claim Trump caved in to the demand of intelligence agencies to keep the files a secret.
But two documents provided by the National Security Agency (NSA) whistle-blower Edward Snowden reveal how closely the intelligence community has held information related to Soviet Union’s as well as Cuba’s potential role in the assassination. The Intercept reports:
“Among the details deemed “top secret” in the JFK assassination guide are the NSA’s efforts to target and intercept Cuban diplomats’ and agents’ communications, as well as its knowledge of the cover names of the Cuban agents whose communications it was listening in on.”
Why did the NSA kept these documents secret for many years? William LeoGrande, professor of government at American University and co-author of “Back Channel to Cuba: The Hidden History of Negotiations between Washington and Havana”, told The Intercept:
“It may be that the Cuban diplomats and agents involved are still active. Remember that the Cubans who entered the revolutionary government were very young at the time.”
Was the 35th President of the United States assassinated as a conspiracy? Conspiracy theorists claim JFK was killed by a coalition of anti-Castro Cubans, the Mob, and the CIA (After the Bay of Pigs Invasion debacle, JKF wanted “to splinter the CIA into a thousand pieces and scatter it to the winds”).
Did he prepare his own death warrant? So it seems. The speech he made in his first 100 days in office, and the Executive Order he signed in an attempt to eliminate the Federal Reserve System about two years later, apparently got John F. Kennedy Killed.
