A part of John F. Kennedy International Airport was evacuated due to a broken water main

A part of the John F. Kennedy International Airport was evacuated Sunday afternoon due to massive water main breakage that occurred as many passengers were already dealing with canceled or delayed flights due to Thursday’s intense weather, reports WPIX.

The break happened at 2 p.m., allowing water to flood a baggage claim area full of the piled suitcases of stranded travelers, who had lined them up in order to wait to board flights. Officials have said that the cause of the break is still being investigated. Both the Port Authority of New York Police Department and the New York Fire Department are on the scene.

Travelers had been complaining about the piling luggage, saying that it was beginning to pose a hazard as new flights came into the airport, and new bags were added to the growing stacks.

This is a developing story. Check back for more information.
