Even Bernie Sanders isn’t calling for THAT…
(Michael Barnes, Liberty Headlines) Progressive Democrats are increasingly accused of endorsing an open borders immigration policy, even if they won’t come out and admit it.
Recently, one House Democrat came forward with a proposal that would effectively accomplish open borders but without taking the political heat for the unpopular position.
Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Oregon, wants to abolish the agency tasked with securing American borders, namely, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE.
Blumenauer announced his proposal in writing on the website, Medium, on Sunday, after a week of fever-pitched media outrage regarding the Trump administration’s border-separation policies for illegal immigrant families – a policy that was in place during the eight-year Obama administration.
Blumenauer touted that he voted against the formation of ICE in 2002, and said that “there’s no turning back when agents of the federal government and our ‘commander and chief’ lose respect for humanity and treat people like animals.”
According to the congressional tracking website GovTrack, Blumenauer’s voting record places him in the ideological center of the current Democratic House caucus, making his idea of abolishing ICE potentially palatable for other House Democrats.
Notably, Cynthia Nixon, the Democratic challenger (and former “Sex and the City” star) to Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, is also making headlines calling for ICE to be abolished.
In a recent campaign ad, she referred to ICE as “a terrorist organization.”
Judging by social media, the activist Left is already onboard.
But there are some holdouts.
Interestingly, Sen. Bernie Sanders, a self-professed socialist and 2016 Democratic Party primary candidate, would not go so far as to endorse Blumenauer’s radical position in a CNN interview on Sunday.
Sanders instead told CNN’s Jake Tapper on “State of the Union” that Congress should pass legislation to deal with immigration “in a rational way.”
In other words, the Democratic Party and members of the mainstream news media are moving further left on immigration than socialist Bernie Sanders.
Blumenauer began is argument by comparing ICE to a phone app that isn’t working properly.
“What do you do?” he asked rhetorically. “Lesson number one: shut it down.”
“We should abolish ICE and start over,” he said continued, and ended with the conclusion that, “to regain the trust of the American people, it’s time we abolish ICE.”
