Since legislatures seem so reticent to do anything about repealing sanctuary state policies, they are going to the average people via ballot initiatives, letting them vote on the idea.
In the last few weeks, it seems like illegal immigration has been the hot topic in the United States, at least until the new nominee to the United States Supreme Court was announced. However, there are still issues with the way that the United States is handling immigration, and liberals seem to hold many of the cards in ‘sanctuary’ areas.
However, some citizens have decided to bypass their liberal local legislatures and put anti-sanctuary city measures on the ballots, so that the voters will be the final ones to make the decision. This massive grassroots move to take on the sanctuary city laws just goes to show that the people have had enough.
In Oregon, there’s almost no chance that the absurdly liberal-leaning legislature would even conceive of repealing their sanctuary state law, which is the oldest such law in the nation.
Because of this, citizens in the state have worked to create the Stop Oregon Sanctuaries campaign, which submitted around 110,000 signatures to get an anti-sanctuary state measure on the ballot in November of this year.
They only needed 88,000 in order to get the measure on the ballot, and to say that liberals in the ‘progressive’ state of Oregon are shocked is an understatement.
According to Kendoll, very often, “they’re legislated upon us,” meaning that the politicians get to make their choices and the average citizen doesn’t get any say.
As of May 2018, there were 564 states, counties, and cities that had adopted ‘sanctuary’ policies, a number which had grown by 650 percent during the Barack Obama era of ‘hope and change.’
The number of sanctuary localities nearly doubled during President Trump’s first year in office.
All that activity, all those areas declaring themselves ‘sanctuary’ for illegal immigrants, even those who had committed criminal acts, led to a predictable backlash.
In California, for example, one of the most left-leaning states in the nation, more than a dozen localities passed some sort of ordinance or resolution against the law.
However, because the state legislature leans absurdly to the left, the state has not repealed its sanctuary law.
Shari Rendell, a state and local director with the Federation for American Immigration Reform, suggested that people were beginning to turn against sanctuary laws because they were sick of watching the laws of the nation and their states not being enforced.
She suggested that would lead to measures on the ballot to give citizens the choice on whether or not their state would treat illegal immigrants as criminals or provide them sanctuary.
The crash in San Francisco in 2010 was caused by a Honduran who had entered the nation illegally, but who had somehow managed to attain temporary protected status.
Now, Rosenberg is working to spearhead the Fight Sanctuary State campaign in California, and will begin collecting signatures in the state to put their proposed initiative, the Community Protection Act, on the ballot in November 2020.
Doing so will require 365,880 signatures.
In Humboldt County, California, which includes the city of Eureka, the board of supervisors agreed on Tuesday to place a measure on the ballot to ask whether the county should become a sanctuary for illegals.
However, these efforts face powerful enemies on the left, like the American Civil Liberties Union.
Kendoll’s group in Oregon faced resistance from ‘Oregonians United Against Profiling,’ a coalition of more than 80 pro-illegal immigration groups who are trying to stop the proposal in the state.
Members of the group even accused the SOS group of racially profiling with their legislation to repeal sanctuary for illegal immigrants.
Mrs. Kendoll pointed out that the leftists are doing what they always do when they have nothing to say; playing the race card.
However, she points out that she knows they’re well-funded. The OUAP has already lined up financial support for their cost from unions, Nike, and Columbia Sportswear.
That doesn’t mean she’s going to give up without a fight, and she has worked on a shoestring budget against opponents who outspent her before.
She thoroughly believes that if the people of Oregon get to vote on the status of their state, it will not remain a sanctuary much longer.
For Americans around the country who are angry that their legislature won’t listen to them, they should remember that ballot initiatives are an option. Let the people decide, rather than a group of elitists removed from the realities of illegal immigration and its impact on the common man.
