Left-wing activist David Hogg received an embarrassing fact check this week after making up a new baseless conspiracy theory, suggesting that the National Rifle Association was manipulating Education Secretary Betsy DeVos.

Hogg spread the conspiracy theory to his 868,000 followers on Thursday, saying that the “NRA is pulling strings to increase gun sales in a record low year.”

Not only is there zero evidence to support Hogg’s claim, the very premise of his claim — that the NRA is trying to increase “record low” gun sales — is a complete lie.

Stephen Gutowski, a reporter for the Free Beacon who is widely considered to be one of the most knowledgeable reporters on everything related to firearms, fact-checked Hogg’s claim:

Hogg, who did not further elaborate on where he got the information to concoct his conspiracy theory, has a history of making false and misleading statements, some of which have been promoted by the media.
