Chipotle fired a manager for racial profiling — then had to rehire her when the truth came out

Chipotle fired a manager in St. Paul, Minnesota, for allegedly racially profiling a group of black customers and refusing to serve them food, then rehired the manager days later when more information came out about who the customers were, according to Business Insider.

Thursday, Masud Ali posted a video on Twitter showing Chipotle employees refusing to serve him and his friends because, according to one of the employees, “you’ve never got money when you come in here.”

The men accused the employees of stereotyping because they were requesting proof that the group had money to pay for the food before preparing it, which is out of the ordinary at Chipotle, a restaurant which typically takes payment after the food is made.

The video went viral online, and Chipotle responded by announcing that the manager who refused to serve the group had been fired. Here’s their statement:

“Regarding what happened at the St. Paul restaurant, the manager thought these gentlemen were the same customers from Tuesday night who weren’t able to pay for their meal. Regardless, this is not how we treat our customers and as a result, the manager has been terminated and the restaurant is being retrained to ensure something like this doesn’t happen again.”

Old tweets tell a different story

Some other Twitter users did some digging into Ali’s online history after Chipotle fired the manager, and found that he had posted numerous tweets discussing dining and dashing at different restaurants, including Chipotle.

In one tweet from 2016, Ali wrote “aye man I think chipotle catchin up to us fam should we change locations and yoooooo what should we do about the other thang.” The tweet had a location tag showing St. Paul.

So, Chipotle publicly apologized to the manager and hired her back:

“Based on our review, we have offered our manager her job back. While our normal protocol was not followed serving these customers, we publicly apologize to our manager for being put in this position. We will work to continue to ensure that we support a respectful workplace for our employees and customers alike.”
