According to investigators, the incident stemmed from a fight between two teens, one of which was 18-years-old. The fight escalated into an exchange of gunfire and when one teen tried to flee the scene he ran into two Hoover police officers who opened fire. Captain Gregg Rector gave a news conference saying a Hoover officer “did engage that individual, shot him and he is dead on the scene.”

The shooting resulted in another teen being hospitalized who is currently in serious condition. The other injured victim was a 12-year-old girl who was caught in the hail of gunfire. She was taken to the hospital but her condition is unknown at this time. The Riverchase Galleria announced the mall would be closed for an undetermined amount of time.
