HARARE, Zimbabwe– Zimbabwe’s ex-first lady, Grace Mugabe has been issued with an arrest warrant for allegedly assaulting a model in a hotel in Johannesburg in 2017.
Grace who is the wife to former Zimbabwe’s president, Robert Mugabe was issued with the warrant last Thursday, according to South Africa’s police service spokesman.
The 53-year-old is said to have assaulted Gabriella Engels with an electrical extension code in the Capital 20 West hotel.
In her defense, Mrs. Mugabe said she had acted in self-defense after the “intoxicated and unhinged” model attacked her with a knife in the room where her two sons were.
The assault came to light in August 2017, and this is when the South African Government gave Mrs. Mugabe diplomatic immunity. However, it was overturned by a court this year after the victim, Gabriel Engels challenged the decision.
It is uncertain why the reporting of the warrant was delayed.
The police spokesman said that the police were seeking assistance from Interpol in order to enforce the warrant. There has been no response from Mrs. Mugabe or the Zimbabwean authorities as of yet.
