JAKARTA, Indonesia – Indonesian search and rescue teams conducted a search effort for victims from the landslide in Sukabumi that killed at least 15 people on New Year’s day.
Indonesia is a disaster-prone area with last year being one of the deadliest years in over a decade with a series of tsunamis and earthquakes that killed over 3,000 people.
During the New Year landslides, thirty houses were buried in Sukabumi regency, West Java and at least 20 people went missing.
According to the disaster mitigation agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, the rescue teams working in the field had a difficult time because of the dangerous loose soil.
In fact, rescuers were forced to suspend the search on Tuesday due to heavy rains.
