‘This is nothing more than far-left wing theater as these policies have no chance of passing…’
(Michael Barnes, Liberty Headlines) Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla. ripped Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and House Democrats on Thursday morning during the opening hours of the two-year 116th Congress.
Rubio was incensed that the first act of newly inaugurated Speaker Pelosi, a career politician who hails from San Francisco, was to insert taxpayer-funded abortion language into a bill that would otherwise end the current government shutdown.
Pelosi’s sleight of hand included an attempt to overturn the Trump administration’s “Protecting Life in Global Health Assistance” policy, which bans the U.S. government from funding of abortions internationally.
Rubio slammed the measure as a harbinger of the “divisive and radical agenda” that is to be expected under Pelosi’s leadership.
“Apparently, Democrats in their first day as the House majority intend on pushing divisive, pro-abortion policies that would allow taxpayer dollars to flow to international organizations that promote and perform abortions,” Rubio said.
“This is nothing more than far-left wing theater as these policies have no chance of passing the Senate or being signed by the President,” he continued.
Pelosi’s insertion into government funding bill also would add $5 million to the United Nations Population Fund, to which the U.S. already contributes $32.5 million annually.
Anti-abortion groups oppose the U.N. initiative because it funds coercive abortions and involuntary sterilizations in foreign countries.
LifeNews, a pro-life media outlet, reported that Pelosi is trying to restore $100 million that President Trump took away from Planned Parenthood when he administratively defunded taxpayer-supported worldwide abortions during his first week in office.
Planned Parenthood is a major Democratic Party donor—often of recycled taxpayer funds—that wields outsized influence in Pelosi’s home state of California. Trump’s global funding ban devastated the abortion giant’s international operations.
Rubio vowed to make sure that House attempts to kickstart abortion programs fail. Under President Barack Obama, the program was known as the “Mexico City Policy.”
“I have consistently worked to ensure that taxpayer dollars are never spent on abortions at home or overseas, and will continue to do so to ensure this bill is defeated.”
