Democrats are itching to move into the conspiracy phase. Joy Reid is getting ahead of the curve.
Why waste time? The Mueller report has been delivered, and the Attorney General is reviewing it. Soon he will tell congress what it says, possibly this weekend. But MSNBC is not one to waste time, it seems, and are getting ahead of labeling as “fake news” Bill Barr’s report on Robert Mueller’s report.
“It feels like the seeds of a cover-up are here,” said host Joy Reid on Saturday morning, less than 30 hours after the delivery of the report was made public.
Reid started the ball rolling when she said she remains “cynical” that Barr is committed to transparency.
It was Above the Law editor Elie Mystal who fires the first conspiracy shot, saying “Is Trump’s flunky going to release a report that might be damaging to his sugar daddy? I don’t think so.”
He said he doesn’t know why people would believe that Barr didn’t force Mueller to end the investigation.
“This is a 22-month-long investigation, Barr’s been on the scene for a month, and now we’re done?” he said. “That doesn’t strike anybody as odd? No, I have absolutely no confidence that Bill Barr will do anything other than what is in the best interest of Donald Trump.”
Joy Reid picked up on the threads, sowing doubt over the entire process.
“The fact that this investigation takes place within the Justice Department, which Donald Trump essentially controls, and that he got rid of the problem, Jeff Sessions, who––the one decent thing that he did was just recuse himself,” she said. “This guy [Barr] is not recused.”
“It feels like the seeds of a cover-up are here,” said Reid.
It’s the same objection before action that Rep. Eric Swalwell angrily snapped about on CNN, and Rep. Adam Schiff pitched by phone. No indictment must mean tampering. It can’t possibly mean no collusion happened.
