Former President Barack Obama is trying to warn Democrats about the backfiring consequences of their socialist agenda, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was likely not too happy about it,.
On Tuesday, Obama met with freshman Democrats on Capitol Hill and warned them about the cost of their massive proposals, urging them to specify to voters how they will actually pay for them.
Obama reportedly urged the freshman Democrats to continue to pursue “bold” ideas, but also to make sure they can explain how they will be paid for and implemented.
Obama knows people like Ocasio-Cortez are gaining a lot of media attention for her socialist ideas, so he’s trying to warn them now that voters in the 2020 elections will likely not support these progressive policies, especially given how expensive they are.
Here’s more from Fox News:
“He said we [as Democrats] shouldn’t be afraid of big, bold ideas – but also need to think in the nitty-gritty about how those big, bold ideas will work and how you pay for them,” one person familiar with Obama’s remarks told The Post.
While the former president did not call out any specific proposals by name, some reportedly took his advice as a note for those new lawmakers pushing “Medicare-for-all” and the Green New Deal—both liberal policies popularized by House freshmen, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y.
The Green New Deal is a massive overhaul of the nation’s economy and energy use, with an estimated cost that could reach well into the tens of trillions of dollars. The resolution, which is nonbinding, is co-sponsored by nearly all major 2020 Democrats in Congress and was introduced in the House last month.
The rollout of the proposal caused headaches for Democrats, as it included FAQs from Ocasio-Cortez containing promises of economic security for those “unwilling to work” and talk of abolishing air travel in favor of high-speed rail. But Ocasio-Cortez has not yet explained a plan for how to fund the program.
The meeting with Obama came on the same day that Ocasio-Cortez’s socialist Green New Deal failed spectacularly in the U.S. Senate.
On Tuesday afternoon, the full Senate voted on her socialist measure, and not a single senator voted “yes” on it.
Zero senators voted “yea,” with 57 voting “nay” and 43 Democrats voting “present.”
Four Democrats — Sens. Doug Jones of Alabama, Joe Manchin of West Virginia, Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona, and Angus King, I-Maine — joined all 53 Republicans in voting against the socialist measure.
And, in terms of Obama warning about these expensive socialist policies, the Green New Deal has also been heavily criticized for how much it will cost taxpayers.
One study found that the price tag for socialist measure would be around $7 trillion.
However, a second study found that the estimated $7 trillion projected cost is painfully low, and that it could actually cost nearly $50 trillion, which would be roughly seven — SEVEN — times more than that.
A third study found that it would actually cost around $93 trillion over the next decade.
All that “free” stuff Ocasio-Cortez keeps promising sure is expensive, and experts argue it will literally end all of civilization if implemented and destroy the country.
The Democratic Party is now becoming too radical for Obama, which is certainly interesting to think about.
