Senator and 2020 Democratic Presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren sat down for an interview on the radio show The Breakfast Club on Friday.
At one point, the co-host of the show, Charlamagne pressed Warren on her false claims regarding her heritage.
Charlamagne started by asking Warren if she regretted getting the DNA test that showed she was only 1/1024th Native American. “Oh, I can’t go back,” Warren started. “I grew up in Oklahoma, I learned about my family the same way most people learn about there family, from there my momma, from my daddy, aunts and my uncles. And it’s what I believed.”
“I’m not a person of color,” she continued. “I’m not a citizen of a tribe and I shouldn’t have done it.”
Charlamagne jumped in and asked if she would still claim to be a Native American if she could do it over again.
“I can’t go back,” Warren said once again. “But, I shouldn’t. But what I do is try to be a good partner. And that’s what I do every day.”
“Pocahontas” Warren tried changing the subject by starting to talk about health care, student loan debt and the housing crisis but the hosts of the show were not having it.
“So what? Your family told you were Native American,” co-host DJ Envy asked.
“Yeah!” Warren said.
“How long did you hold on to that?” Charlamagne asked. “Because there were some reports that said you were Native American on your Texas Bar license and that you said you were Native American, also documents when you were a professor at Harvard–like, why did you do that?”
Warren failed to answer the question and instead blamed her past mistakes on her family.
Charlamagne wasn’t done. He went on to ask, “When did you find out you weren’t?” This question was never answered.
Warren had a “glitch” after this question was asked and had trouble replying: “I’m not a person of color. I’m not a citizen of a tribe and tribal citizenship is an important distinction, and not something I am. So…” The Senator stopped mid-sentence not knowing what to say as she waited for another question.
“Was there any benefits to that?” Charlamagne fired back.
“No,” she said. She then discussed a report that “proved” it did not help her at all. “Boston Globe did a full investigation, it never affected anything about my family. It never affected any job I ever got.”
“It’s kind of like the original Rachel Dolezal a little bit,” Charlamagne said slamming Warren. “Rachel Dolezal is a white woman pretending to be black.”
“Well, this is what I learned from my family,” Warren responded as she threw her hands up in the air.
