After being questioned about her claim that she “saw migrants drinking out of toilets” at a border detention facility in early July, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is still holding firm on her account despite the fact that there has been no evidence and more and more discrepancies to her story.
use \As it turns out, it appears that this entire lie began because the migrant that AOC spoke to used a word that can be interpreted for bathroom or toilet, and AOC didn’t realize it.
This entire lie, it appears, took off because AOC doesn’t understand Spanish.
The media was abuzz after her ludicrous claim detailing her visit to the facilities, giving outlets like CNN and Vox the opportunity to show the “shocking” conditions for migrants detained at the border.
Her “toilet” claims were immediately shot down by US Border Patrol Chief of Operations Brian Hastings, visiting Hispanic pastors, and other others.
Agent Roy Villareal went one step further and debunked her claims by giving a video tour of the facilities, showing that each room has fresh water, in addition to a potable-water sink that sits atop a toilet unit.
So what happened? It is possible to have that much passion when you’re lying through your teeth?
Is it possible, perhaps, that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortex has been duped by a bad translation of Spanish, and is now having to create a cover story to hide her blunder?
Some have speculated as much as the drinking-from-toilets story comes crashing down upon her.
Rush Limbaugh commented on her possible misfortune on his radio program on July 2:
RUSH: Back to the phones to Philadelphia. John, great to have you. Glad you waited. You’re next on the EIB Network. Hello.
CALLER: Hey, Rush. Longtime listener.
RUSH: Thank you, sir.
CALLER: First fan! Welcome from the home of the greatest country on the planet, Philadelphia. So AOC, what is this crap about a toilet? Does she understand it’s an integrated system with the bowl and sink is on top of the tank and it’s all one? Every holding cell in the United States and most modern countries have this? That woman who she’s talking to had probably never seen one ’cause she comes from a Third World country.
RUSH: That’s a good point. That’s a good point.
CALLER: I mean, obviously AOC doesn’t know because she’s never been out from behind the bar in her life.
RUSH: Wait a minute. No, no. What would Ocasio-Cortez not knowing about one-piece toilet’s…? How…? Walk me through what this means or how it discredits what she’s saying?
CALLER: Well, because she listened to somebody who (probably in broken English through a translator) said she’s drinking out of a toilet because someone told her, “The sink is on the toilet. It’s on top.” So the only conversation she can have, and it’s probably not a good translation for it, is that you drink from the toilet. But AOC doesn’t understand it.
RUSH: Oh. So you’re saying that the illegal immigrant is drinking out of the sink but thinks it’s the toilet because of translation problems?
CALLER: Correct. Every jail cell in America has that same integrated system. It’s —
RUSH: I wouldn’t know. I’ve never seen one. You can’t trust —
CALLER: Every movie that shows jail cells has that same system in it. It’s just people don’t pay attention to it.
RUSH: All right. Okay. Let me use my memory here. I have seen TV shows with toilets in prison cells. The toilet and the sink is one unit?
CALLER: Yeah! It’s all integrated.
RUSH: It’s one, the toilet and the sink. So the sink’s above the toilet.
CALLER: The sink’s… You know, where the tank typically is, the top portion of that tank is made into a faucet and a little bowl for a sink.
RUSH: Oh, okay! Okay! So that would look like — to somebody who doesn’t know what they’re talking about — they’re drinking out of the toilet, which the equivalent of the sink or the tank. Okay! I get it. I knew she was an idiot.
Now keep in mind that this is a best-case scenario. AOC was either fooled, or she’s a complete liar. Let’s assume that she’s not a liar, but rather, is a huge simpleton who was duped in her own quest to create some drama.
Eddie Scarry, a journalist for the Washington Examiner, implied that the translation issue came because the migrant that AOC spoke to used a word that can be used for bathroom or toilet, and AOC didn’t realize it.
You can see his tweet below:
“Agent in El Paso yesterday told me he was there to see the migrant talk with AOC. agent said when ACO asked “where do you drink water?” The migrant said “a el baño” which means toilet but that’s what they call call the contraption that combines a toilet with water fountain atop.”
So was AOC lying, or is maybe just bad at translating Spanish?
