On Thursday, August 29, 2019, Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden told a town hall at Clinton College in Rock Hill, South Carolina that he would shut down migrant shelters and detention facilities at the border.

A student from Clinton College asked Biden what he would do to improve and help migrants at detention facilities.

Biden responded, “Close them down!”

He then bellowed, “No, no, no, no, no, no.”

Biden added, “We don’t need them. We [meaning President Barack Obama and himself] found that, when we were in office, in fact … [when] we finally got things under control, you have to report back for a hearing on such-and-such a date, people show up!”

The former Vice President conveniently omits that many of the migrant shelters and detention facilities were opened during the Obama administration after an uptick in unaccompanied minors to the border.

Additionally, the Department of Homeland Security recently revealed to Congress that as high as 90 percent of alleged “asylum-seekers” did not bother to show up to their court hearings.

Some of Biden’s presidential rivals such as Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren have also demanded that these facilities be closed.

Taking the radical open borders position has been the Democratic Party’s go-to strategy in the 2020 elections.

Indeed, there is an electoral incentive behind this position.

BLP reported that districts with large foreign-born populations tended to vote Democratic in the last election cycle.

However, massive migrant waves may bring many unintended consequences thanks to the already entrenched welfare state that prevents many immigrants from assimilating.

Such social and economic burdens are some of the reasons why GOP voters put immigration as the #1 issue heading into the 2020 elections.
