Illegal immigrants seeking asylum at the US southern border are being released into American communities after testing positive for the coronavirus.
Reporters from Telemundo recounted speaking to asylum seekers released from Customs and Border Patrol custody who said they had tested positive for the coronavirus.
“Right now we were tested for Covid and they separated about eight of us because we were positive,” she told Noticias Telemundo Investiga. “We are waiting right now.”
An overwhelming majority of southern border crossers who apply for asylum in the immigration court system ultimately lose their cases, although they’re in the country legally until the court system rejects their claim. Migrants who said they tested positive for the virus also indicated at a Brownsville, Texas bus station that they planned to travel to communities in North Carolina, Maryland and New Jersey. NBC reported Tuesday that city officials have begun testing migrants released from federal custody for the safety of the community, and since the municipal tests started, more than 100 migrants released from CBP custody have tested positive for the virus.
As many as 6.3% to 13% of migrants released from federal custody have tested positive for the coronavirus, presenting a considerable danger for bus drivers and workers in the transportation industry. Individuals who have completed a hazardous and unsanitary journey north from countries such as Honduras and Guatemala are less likely to follow public health recommendations that would discourage such risky international travel to begin with.
With states such as Texas finally getting a grasp on the COVID-19 pandemic, it appears that a Biden surge of illegal border crossers are primed to return the disease, along with new variations of the virus, into the community. It appears that the Biden administration is more than willing to ignore far-reaching national travel they’ve discouraged citizens from undertaking numerous times- as long as those traveling through the country are illegal immigrants.
