In 2020, scientists in the U.S. started collecting and analyzing sewage to track COVID-19 infections (see 123).  In December 2021, labs started testing for the Omicron variant as well.  More recently the CDC decided to create a wastewater surveillance dashboard and expand wastewater testing.
