The answer to the question is obvious. For as long as I’ve been interested in politics, from my days in high school with Young Conservatives, I’ve seen Republicans claim to be “conservatives” when very few actually were.
The same can now be said about those who claim the mantle of being “America First.” It’s a symbol of supposedly being aligned with President Trump, but like the so-called conservatives of the past, few who label themselves as “America First” actually act on behalf of America… first.
That’s always going to be an issue when dealing with politicians, but I’ve seen the same thing happening in conservative media. News outlets who grab the America First label often share perspectives, especially in their commentary, that is anything from being truly America First.
One of the things I love the most about being here at America Out Loud Talk Radio is knowing that the people I’m surrounded by on the political end are legitimately patriots who love America and will write and talk about what’s best for the nation. That’s not to say I always agree with everyone, but I do not doubt their sincerity. Disagreeing is one thing, but far too many in so-called “conservative” media are actually the journalistic versions of RINOs, Neo-Cons, and swamp creatures.
We are in a situation that acts as a divining rod. Pretty much everything about the Ukraine situation is terrible and I hate finding silver linings in circumstances that involve death, but the Ukrainian crisis has allowed the real America First patriots to stand out in a sea of warmongers and Neo-Cons.
The real issue to help define one’s perspectives on the “America-First Scale” is whether or not conservative journalists are calling for actions that would propel us into WWIII. We can disagree about a lot of things surrounding the situation. For example, I’m not a fan of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, but that doesn’t mean I believe those who like him are not America First patriots. On topics like that, we can differ.
Where we can’t differ is on America’s role in this. There are various degrees of intervention we can engage in to try to dissuade Vladimir Putin from continuing his invasion, but a true America First patriot will never advocate for military intervention. Ukraine is not an ally. We can support the Ukrainian people and even send them various types of aid, but we cannot get ourselves or NATO directly involved.
One perfect example is the no-fly zone proposed by many. A no-fly zone is not a meaningless gesture. It’s a serious military statement, and when a Russian jet is shot down by a NATO anti-aircraft missile battery, we will be in WWIII. Period. Russia will immediately hit NATO, which means we will have to hit Russia. Then, we all suffer.
An America First patriot may love Zelenskyy and want to send him everything he wants. But once we cross the line of military intervention, our world will change forever. I don’t know what the outcome would be but I know with a certainty it won’t be better FOR US OR UKRAINE than if we keep our military and NATO’s military out of the action.
On today’s episode of The JD Rucker Political Report, I discussed the topics that I believe make me an America First patriot. As much as I hate talking about myself, I’ve had requests via email and DM from people wanting to know more. Plus, I’m starting a new show to go along with the three I have already, so it became prudent to put together a “get to know JD” episode.
