The bricks laid out in downtown Washington D.C. reminded many of similar occurrences during the violent George Floyd riots in 2020. During the riots, pallets of bricks were routinely found along protest routes in a number of cities that suffered violent riots.

In June 2020, police in St. Louis, Missouri identified pallets of bricks that were believed to be connected with riot activity. We have learned of & discovered stashes of bricks and rocks in & around the Plaza and Westport to be used during a riot,” announced the Kansas City Police Department on May 31, 2020. “If you see anything like this, you can text 911 and let us know so we can remove them. Similar instances were reported in Minneapolis, New York City, Dallas, and Washington D.C.
