(UnitedVoice.com) – Owning a pet in America is expensive. With crushing inflation and skyrocketing rents, many families are giving up their beloved fur babies in an increasingly difficult economy. The issue has shelters in some of the country’s biggest cities overwhelmed with an influx of surrendered dogs and cats.

Katy Hansen from the Animal Care Center of NYC told Fox News the organization has seen an increase of 25% over last year. Hansen believes people losing their jobs and needing to move to apartments where pets aren’t allowed contributed to the influx, but the obvious issues of the sheer cost of taking care of an animal also implicated the numbers. In tough times, people make difficult choices.
