An activist has posted a petition seeking to stop the development and rollout of 5G technology over fears it is “an experiment on humanity and the environment.”

Arthur Firstenberg’s petition to world leaders calls for 5G plans to be scrapped.

“Every person on Earth will have instant access to super-high-speed, low-latency wireless communications from any point on the planet, even in rainforests, mid-ocean and the Antarctic,” the petition reads.

“What is not widely acknowledged is that this will also result in unprecedented environmental change on a global scale. . . . Despite widespread denial, the evidence that radio frequency (RF) radiation is harmful to life is already overwhelming.”

5G is the next generation of communication, both broadband and wireless. Some companies already offer 5G broadband for use in homes, but wireless 5G is slated to be introduced starting this year as the massive infrastructure it requires is built.

5G has been in development for a decade and will allow download speeds up to 20 times faster than the current 4G standard.

Firstenberg, who already has more than 40,000 signatures on his petition, warned of grave dangers posed by 5G. He said electromagnetic fields can result in several ailments, including heart arrhythmias, cancer, obesity and diabetes, and stress. Children can also be plagued by autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and asthma, according to the petition.

Several cell phone service providers will debut 5G phones later this year. That list of devices will not include those made by Apple, which does not plan to release a 5G-capable phone — which requires different technology to access the 5G network — until at least 2020.
