Two children were killed and several others were wounded after a gunman opened fire at a Texas elementary school following a shootout with border patrol agents.

Uvalde Memorial Hospital confirmed that two children were brought in dead on arrival and that they were treating several more following a shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, KSAT.com reported.

A gunman allegedly opened fire at an elementary school after he exchanged gunfire with border patrol agents and barricaded himself in the school, sending the campus and all other schools in the district into lockdown.

Hours after the lockdown police confirmed they apprehended the suspect.

Police have not confirmed any injuries or fatalities. Still, Uvalde Memorial said they were ‘currently caring for several students in the ER’ and asked that the immediate family of injured students report to the hospital’s cafeteria.

University Health San Antonio confirmed they received a child and adult patient from the shooting but could not verify their current conditions.

New video from the chaotic scene shows police arriving at the school campus with their guns in hand and one video shared online appears to show the suspected gunman approaching the school while what sounds like gunfire is going off in the background.

‘There is an active shooter at Robb Elementary. The Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District said law enforcement is on site. ‘Your cooperation is needed at this time by not visiting the campus. As soon as more information is gathered it will be shared.’

Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin told Fox News that shots were fired offsite and that after shooting one person the gunman ran to the school where he remained barricaded.

The Uvalde elementary school, which has 600 students enrolled, is located 60 miles east of the Mexican border and 80 miles west of San Antonio.

The district said that the city’s civic center will be used as a reunification center and that parents will be able to pick up their children there once everyone is accounted for.
