Study: Women With High Cholesterol Less Likely To Develop Breast Cancer

A new study claims that women diagnosed with high cholesterol are 45% less likely to develop breast cancer.

Scientists attending a conference of the European Society of Cardiology in Barcelona, Spain, learned about the findings from a longitudinal study of more than one million patient records.

Women with high cholesterol levels – with a “diagnosis of hyperlipidaemia” – enjoy significant protection against breast cancer, and lower overall mortality aswell.

Breastcancer.com reports: Read the abstract of “Patients with a diagnosis of hyperlipidaemia have a reduced risk of developing breast cancer and lower mortality rates: a large retrospective longitudinal cohort study from the UK ACALM registry.”

To do the study, the researchers looked at the records of 16,043 women in the United Kingdom who were admitted to the hospital between Jan. 1, 2000 and March 31, 2013 with a diagnosis of high cholesterol. The women were age 40 or older.

The researchers compared the records of the women with high cholesterol to a group of women of similar ages without high cholesterol. None of the women had been diagnosed with breast cancer when the study started. The average age of the women in the study was 66.

The researchers found that women with high cholesterol were 45% less liked to be diagnosed with breast cancer than women without high cholesterol.

The researchers then adjusted the data for factors that might influence survival, including age, ethnicity, and conditions such as high blood pressure and heart failure. They found that women with high cholesterol who were diagnosed with breast cancer were 40% less likely to die from breast cancer than women without high cholesterol.

Why women with high cholesterol have a lower risk of breast cancer isn’t clear, but the researchers suspect that statins, medicines used to lower cholesterol, might be the reason.

“Compared to those without high cholesterol, patients with high cholesterol had a 45% reduced risk of breast cancer, and if they did develop breast cancer, a 40% reduced chance of death,” said Dr. Rahul Potluri, of Aston University and senior author of the study. “If a diagnosis of high cholesterol leads to lower breast cancer rates, this must either relate to something inherent in the condition or affected patients, or more likely, to treatment with widely used cholesterol lowering interventions such as statins.”

“Our research confirms that women with a diagnosis of high cholesterol have strikingly lower rates of breast cancer with improved death rates and survival,” said Dr. Paul Carter, lead author of the study. “Building on previous research by us and other groups, including animal studies in which statins reduced the risk of breast cancer, this gives a strong indication that statins produce this protective effect in breast cancer.”

Still, it is too early to recommend statins to prevent or slow the growth of breast cancer. Much more research needs to be done to understand exactly how statins might be used to reduce the risk of breast cancer.

Eight Disneyland guests, one worker contracted Legionnaires’ disease

Eight guests and one worker at Disneyland have contracted Legionnaires’ disease, prompting the Anaheim, Calif., theme park to close a pair of cooling towers.

Besides the nine cases, three other people who lived in or traveled to Anaheim developed the disease, according to the Orange County Health Care Agency, as reported by the Los Angeles Times.

The 12 victims ranged from 52 to 94 years old. Ten of the people were hospitalized and one person “with additional health issues” died, despite not visiting the park, OCHCA Public Information Officer Jessica Good said in a report by KNBC-TV.

In Orange County, 55 cases of the disease have been reported this year.

About three weeks ago, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notified county authorities of several cases of the disease among people who had traveled to Orange County in September. By the end of October, Disneyland learned of the cases.

On Nov. 3, Disney informed the health agency that routine testing had detected elevated levels of Legionella bacteria in two cooling towers a month earlier. The company said the towers, located in a space more than 100 feet from areas accessible to guests, were disinfected and were returned to service Sunday.

On Tuesday, Disney took the towers down again because the health agency ordered them to verify they were free of the Legionella contamination.

Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Chief Medical Officer Pamela Hymel said Disney conducted more tests on all of their water towers.

“There is no known ongoing risk associated with this outbreak,” the health care agency said in a statement.

OCHCA said the Legionnaires’ disease exposure period in Anaheim was Sept. 12-27.

The type of pneumonia was named Legionnaires’ disease after an outbreak of pneumonia caused 34 deaths at a 1976 American Legion Convention in Philadelphia in 1976. Legionnaires’ disease is caused by bacteria growing in water that can spread when small droplets get into the air and people breathe them in, according to the CDC. It is not contagious from person to person.

People generally contract the disease two days after exposure and usually can be treated with antibiotics, though the CDC said one in 10 people die from the infection.

Research Shows Switching To Non-GMO Diet Can Reverse These 28 Conditions

Varieties of GMO foods include most corn and soy, alfalfa which is fed to animals, zucchini, yellow squash and papaya, and now certain varieties of apples and potatoes as well. All of these products are commercially sold and have not been backed by any serious long-term studies proving them safe.

In fact, due to lawsuits by the Alliances for Bio-Integrity, in 1998 the FDA was forced to hand over several internal memos revealing that agency scientists inside the FDA had repeatedly warned that GMO foods could cause serious side effects such as allergies and nutritional problems, but they were ignored and no long-term testing was done.

According to the research, there are three major potential causes of illness from GMO. These include 1) the generic side-effects of the GMO transformation process, 2) the Bt toxin found in GMO corn and cotton plants and 3) the herbicides, particularly glyphosate-based herbicides, which are sprayed on most GMOs.

Disturbing effects which may occur at a biological level in GM crops can range from unexpected changes to amino acids, immunoreactive and potentially allergic proteins, or misshapen proteins. Alteration of RNA and gene function can also occur as a result of consuming GM foods.

Conclusion

Although it would take highly controlled long-term human trials to scientifically prove that negative effects of eating GMO’s exist in humans, it becomes self-evident after looking through the wealth of research available on health risks associated with GM foods that avoiding them is a safe bet toward long-term overall health and avoiding disease.

New Virus With NO CURE Spreading: This Is WORSE Than The ‘Black Death’

A new virus for which medical officials have no remedy is spreading. The infectious disease also has a fatality rate of almost 90% making it much more deadly than the black death plaguing Madagascar.

deadly outbreak of a rare and highly fatal virus has broken out in eastern Uganda and five cases have already been identified, the World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed. The disease is known as the Marburg virus. It is similar to the Ebola virus and can be fatal in up to 88% of cases.

The outbreak of the contagious and deadly Marburg virus disease in the Kween district of eastern Uganda was declared by the nation’s Ministry of Health back on October 19. Since then, five cases have been identified as international aid agencies, stretched thin by Madagascar’s black death outbreak, have rushed to deploy teams on the ground to control the recent outbreak. This news comes amid a surge in cases of plague in Madagascar, which is considered to be the “worst outbreak in 50 years” and now at “crisis” point.

Marburg virus disease (MVD), which causes severe viral hemorrhagic fever, ranks among the most virulent pathogens known to infect humans, according to the World Health Organization. The WHO website reads: “Marburg virus disease is a rare disease with a high mortality rate for which there is no specific treatment. The virus is transmitted by direct contact with the blood, body fluids, and tissues of infected persons or wild animals (e.g. monkeys and fruit bats).” MVD also falls within the same family as the Ebola virus – the hemorrhagic fever that decimated West Africa and killed around 11,000 in 2014 and 2015.

The outbreak is thought to have begun in September when a man in his 30s, who worked as a game hunter and lived near a cave with a heavy presence of bats, was admitted to a local health center with a high fever, vomiting, and diarrhea. The man’s condition deteriorated quickly and he failed to respond to antimalarial treatments. He died after being taken to another hospital, and a short time later, his sister in her 50’s also died of the same ailment.

Emergency screening has begun at the Kenya-Uganda border in Turkana after all three members of the same family died of the disease in Uganda. Health workers have been asked to work with communities to stop the deadly Marburg outbreak from devastating communities in the rural region.

Dr. Zabulon Yoti, a Technical Coordinator for Emergencies at the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Africa, said: “Community engagement is the cornerstone of emergency response.” He urged health officials to “work with the communities to build their capacity for success and sustainability” and develop a better understanding of the local customs and traditions.

Early symptoms include fever, chills, headache, and myalgia (muscle pain). Several hundred people have been exposed to the virus as officials worry this outbreak could spread rapidly into regions already devastated by the ongoing black death outbreak.

While it is widely known that chemotherapy doesn’t work 97% of the time (in fact, people die from chemotherapy, not cancer), there are successful alternative treatments for cancer patients, lemon extract and baking soda destroy cancer cells without harming healthy tissues, and despite the fact that US National Cancer Institute has publicly admitted marijuana kills cancer cells, the largely preventable disease kills over 9 million people across the world annually.

Specifically, cancer claims the lives of more than half a million Americans every year — one of every four deaths in the United States is due to cancer, a purely man-made disease. In 2017, there will be an estimated 1,688,780 new cancer cases diagnosed and 600,920 cancer deaths in the United States.

However, the deadly statistics may change if we pay attention to artemisinin – an Artemisia Annua (sweet wormwood) derivative, which in combination with iron can wipe out 98% of cancer cells in less than 16 hours with zero impact on the healthy cells.

Used in Chinese medicine to treat malaria, artemisinin and artemisinin-derived compounds have been shown to exhibit antiviral, anti-inflammatory, anti-parasitic, anti-allergic, anti-fibrotic, anti-arrhythmic, immune-regulatory and contraceptive actions.

In a 2005 study conducted by researchers at the University of Washington, it was found that artemesinin killed iron-enriched breast cancer cells without negatively affecting the healthy cells. Alone, the researchers claimed, the herb caused a 28% reduction in breast cancer cells, but partnered with iron, the duo almost completely erased cancer. They concluded:

“By itself, artemisinin is about 100 times more selective in killing cancer cells as opposed to normal cells. In this study, the new artemisinin compound was 34,000 times more potent in killing the cancer cells as opposed to their normal cousins. So the tagging process appears to have greatly increased the potency of artemisinin’s cancer-killing properties.”

Then in 2012, researchers at the University of California found that artemisinin selectively attacked “bad” cells, and left “good” cells untouched. They noted:

“Artemisinin, a sesquiterpene phytolactone derived from Artemisia annua, is a potent antimalarial compound with promising anticancer properties, although the mechanism of its anticancer signaling is not well understood.

“…our results demonstrate that the artemisinin disruption of E2F1 transcription factor expression mediates the cell cycle arrest of human breast cancer cells and represents a critical transcriptional pathway by which artemisinin controls human reproductive cancer cell growth.”

Tu Youyou, a Chinese pharmaceutical chemist, was awarded the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discovering artemisinin and its treatment of malaria, which is regarded as a significant breakthrough in 20th century tropical medicine and saved millions of lives in South Asia, Africa, and South America.

“Artemisinin can be very effective because it selectively affects tumor cells without harming normal cells. This is because artemisinin affects only cells that contain excessive amounts of iron which is the case for cancer cells. When coming in contact with iron, artemisinin triggers the release of intracellular free radicals that destroy [cancer] cells.”
