‘(Cohen) made the decision on the payments and he didn’t tell (Trump)…’
(Ben Peters, CQ-Roll Call) Fox News host Sean Hannity appeared to insert himself into the congressional investigation of President Donald Trump in an interview with Trump aired Thursday night, leading to speculation that he could be subpoenaed.
Hannity asserted to the president that Michael Cohen, Trump’s former attorney who testified in front of the House Oversight and Reform Committee on Wednesday, gave him information that conflicts with Cohen’s testimony.
Cohen explained to the committee that Trump directed him to make illegal hush money payments to pornographic actress Stormy Daniels.
On Thursday Hannity told Trump “I can tell you personally, he said to me at least a dozen times, that he (Cohen) made the decision on the payments and he didn’t tell you,” Hannity told Trump.
Hannity’s comment caught the attention of Democratic Rep. David Cicilline of Rhode Island.
“I look forward to his (Hannity’s) testimony,” Cicilline said in a tweet.
National security lawyer Bradley P. Moss had a similar thought.
“Hannity just made himself a witness in a congressional inquiry and the SDNY (Southern District of New York) probe,” Moss said. The president declared in a succession of tweets Friday that Cohen is “totally discredited” and he criticized Democrats for pursuing investigative inquiries about his finances.
Cohen is scheduled to begin serving a three-year prison sentence in May.
