Further showers are expected today, with highs of 21C (70F). But forecasters say there will soon be a return to a ‘Spanish summer’ with further hot spells on the way.
In response to the warming climate, the Met Office recently changed its definition of a heatwave, meaning that it now requires certain thresholds to be met for three consecutive days.
Experts claim heatwaves should now be given names as they’re the future.
Just like every low pressure area has now been given a name to make them seem more scary, the rules on heatwaves were changed to lower the definition of a heatwave so they can claim there are more of them when there aren’t. Claims of high temperature records are always dubious and from locations suffering from UHI pollution. Heathrow Airport is a favourite for claims, not that it has any validity as a long term record since until the end of the war it was a field, and permanent buildings only appeared at the start of the 60s.
