A large group of ‘young people’ wielding sticks and branches stormed aboard a public bus in France and severely beat passengers for no known reason, according to reports.

The harrowing incident unfolded at around 4 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon in Villeurbanne, a commune in the metropolis of Lyon.

A group of around 20 underage ‘schoolchildren’ reportedly piled onto a bus brandishing improvised weapons and embarked on an “extremely violent attack.”

“They first threatened and insulted the driver before attacking the passengers directly,” Lyon Mag reports.

“Several blows were dealt with customers of the TCL network. A rider, who expressed her dissatisfaction with the attitude of these young people, was more severely beaten and had to be taken care of by the firefighters.”

The driver filed a formal complaint following the attack and an investigation has been opened.

“We reacted immediately, in conjunction with the perfect delegated to security, the mayor of Villeurbanne, and the head of the school,” announced the local transport authority, SYTRAL.

Surveillance footage is being reviewed and parents of suspected assailants are being contacted, officials say.

“SYTRAL’s priority is to ensure the safety of the staff and passengers of the TCL network and we are working on this every day,” said SYTRAL president Bruno Bernard, adding that he “firmly denounced this behavior.”
