A CBS News anchor pushed back against California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s (D) declaration that the Second Amendment is a “suicide pact” amid a spate of shootings in the state, noting that most gun owners are law-abiding.

Newsom was asked his thoughts about the two mass shootings that took place over the last couple of days, one that resulted in 11 dead in Monterey Park, and 7 dead in the Half Moon Bay community in northern California.

“Nothing about this is surprising,” Newsom told CBS News. “Everything about this is infuriating.”

CBS News anchor Norah O’Donnell noted that California has some of the strictest gun control laws in the country, but Newsom pivoted to attacking the Second Amendment.

“I mean, the Second Amendment is becoming a suicide pact,” Newsom said as he walked down the street followed by his armed security.

“But there are many people in this country that support the Second Amendment and are lawful gun owners,” O’Donnell pushed back.

Newsom tried clarifying his remarks, saying “Yeah, I have great respect — I have no ideological opposition to someone who is reasonably and responsibly owning firearms and getting background checks and being trained.”

The recent shootings have prompted Joe Biden and other Democrats to renew calls for Congress to pass more gun control laws.

Biden on Monday specifically called for Congress to pass a ban on “assault weapons” and high-capacity magazines and legislation that raises the minimum purchasing age to 21.
