Everyone’s favorite epidemiologist, Dr. Anthony Fauci, has said that indefinite booster shots are not out of the question.

Appearing Thursday on CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360,” Fauci was interviewed for 10 minutes on the potential need for third vaccine doses and annual boosters. He said he hopes that even if booster shots are developed and recommended, they will provide sufficient protection so that people don’t have to get one every year.

Regardless, Fauci emphasized that “we are humble and modest” in the face of COVID-19 and that he doesn’t have clear answers at this time. The findings of clinical trials and studies will need to be released before public health authorities decide on a course of action.

Fauci’s interview comes on the heels of news that the FDA has approved third doses of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines for a select group of immunocompromised people. Researchers are also studying the “safety and the body’s immune response to a mixed booster shot of one of the three vaccines approved under FDA emergency use authorization.”

In late July, Big League Politics covered Fauci’s warning that the US was “heading in the wrong direction” due to the Delta variant. He suggested that even vaccinated Americans might need to wear masks again. Since then, several locales in the US have reinstituted mask mandates indoors, with growing numbers of establishments requiring proof of vaccination to enter.

It doesn’t appear we’ll be getting off this hellish roller coaster anytime soon.
