TOKYO, JAPAN: Japan carried out a threat to publicly shame people who do not comply with border measures related to COVID-19 by releasing the names of three people who broke quarantine rules after returning from abroad.

The Health Ministry said, on Monday, the three Japanese nationals avoided contact with authorities after recently returning from overseas.

The announcement, the first of its kind, sparked a series of rumors on Twitter about the details of those identified, including their jobs and locations.

The country is requesting all travelers from overseas, including Japanese citizens, to self-quarantine for two weeks, as well as install and activate a location-tracking app on their smartphones and report their health conditions.
