Despite the absence of newly reported cases of the virus, Morris Brown College, a black private liberal arts institution, has chosen to reintroduce these measures as a precautionary measure. This development comes merely a week after the commencement of classes, raising questions about the basis of this decision.
According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s report, the college has attributed this move to reports of positive cases among students in the Atlanta University Center, a consortium of black colleges and universities located in Atlanta. The set of precautions encompasses mandatory masking, social distancing, temperature checks, and limitations on large gatherings. The college administration has stated that these measures will be enforced for a two-week period.

The guidelines for employees are equally comprehensive. They are required to wear medical-grade face coverings (such as surgical masks, KN95, or N95) when indoors, with the exception of instances when they are alone in a closed office, actively consuming food or beverages at their workstation, or present as the sole individual in a spacious open workspace.
While no new cases have been officially reported, the college’s decision is aimed at proactively preventing potential outbreaks and ensuring the safety of the campus community. In a similar vein, Los Angeles County Public Health has issued recommendations for higher-risk individuals to continue wearing masks, citing a rise in COVID cases despite low hospitalization rates. This dual concern for public safety and minimizing the risk of viral spread underscores the ongoing challenges posed by the pandemic, even in the absence of significant infection numbers. As colleges and offices take proactive measures, it remains to be seen how such decisions will be received and their efficacy in maintaining a healthy environment.
