A brutal clash between Mexican troops and illegal migrants traveling in a ‘caravan’ toward the United States resulted in serious injuries, according to reports.

Members of the large migrant caravan engaged the Mexican National Guard in a ferocious battle in the southern state of Chiapas on Thursday.

Ultimately, Mexican soldiers were forced to flee after being overpowered by insurgents using improvised weapons and hurling stones.

Footage from the battle was shared on social media.

“So heavy was the rain of rocks that at least two guard officers tumbled from the trucks onto the highway below near the town of Pijijiapan, in the southern state of Chiapas,” according to the Associated Press.

In some videos, migrants can be seen viciously kicking an injured officer as he lays injured on the ground before others intervene to assist him.

Estimates indicate around 3,000 illegal aliens are currently participating in the caravan as it moves toward Mexico City and, if successful, the U.S. southern border.

Earlier this week, a migrant was killed and four more wounded when Mexican officers fired upon on a smuggling vehicle attempting to evade a checkpoint inspection in Chiapas.
