According to a recently released poll, President Donald Trump’s approval rating relating to his handeling of the Chinese coronavirus has skyrocketed just this past week.
“In the new poll, 55% of Americans approve of the president’s management of the crisis, compared to 43% who disapprove,” ABC News reported. “Trump’s approval on this issue is up from last week, when the numbers were nearly reversed. Only 43% approved of Trump’s handling of the pandemic and 54% disapproved in last week’s poll.”
The poll comes after a long week of press conferences and actions from the Trump administration as they try to combat the Chinese Virus.
“Over the course of a week, the president has shifted his approach and tone, giving daily briefings on the crisis since Saturday, alongside the White House task force leading the response to the coronavirus and announcing some severe measures to combat the virus,” ABC News continued. “During the two days in which the poll was conducted, the president signed an economic relief bill to help combat the coronavirus, ensuring free testing and paid leave for certain workers, governors and local leaders across the country have imposed more stringent restrictions on travel and day-to-day movements, trading on Wall Street was halted again after the stock market continued to plunge and the number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus hiked to over 9,000 across all 50 states.”
The number of cases in the United States is beginning to rapidly increase as more test kits have become available for testing. The rapid increase is forcing state governors to take action.
“A state as large as ours, a nation-state, is many parts, but at the end of the day, we are one body,” said California Governor Gavin Newsom. “There is a mutuality and there’s a recognition of our interdependence that requires of this moment that we direct a statewide order for people to stay at home.”
“That directive goes into force and effect this evening and we are confident that the people of the state of California will abide by it, will do the right thing, they’ll meet this moment, they’ll step up, as they have over the course of the last number of weeks to protect themselves, to protect their families, and to protect the broader community in this great state in the world that we reside in,” he continued.
“As I say, there is a social contract here, people I think recognize the need to do more and to meet this moment,” Newsom noted. “People will self-regulate their behavior, they’ll begin to adjust and adapt as they have been quite significantly. We will have social pressure that will encourage people to do the right thing, just a nod and look saying, ‘hey, maybe you should reconsider just being out there on the beach, being 22 strong at a park.’”
“I don’t believe the people of California need to be told through law enforcement that it’s appropriate just to home isolate, protect themselves, go about the essential patterns of life but do so by socially distancing themselves from others and do so using your common sense,” Newsom said.
