NEW YORK, New York: Pfizer’s Coronavirus vaccine has been shown to be more effective in children and teens between the ages 12 and 15 years, than in adults.

Test results show that the Pfizer vaccine demonstrated a 100 percent efficacy rate in young people.

Among the group given a placebo, only 20 cases of COVID-19 were reported. No cases of Covid were reported among the youug people who were vaccinated, Pfizer reported.

Pfizer added that the side effects among those vaccinated were generally the same as seen in an earlier study in people between 16 and 25 years.

“We share the urgency to expand the authorization of our vaccine to use in younger populations and are encouraged by the clinical trial data,” Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said.

“We plan to submit these data to FDA as a proposed amendment to our emergency use authorization in the coming weeks, and to other regulators around the world, with the hope of starting to vaccinate this age group before the start of the next school year.”

In December, the Pfizer vaccine was approved for use in the United States. Millions of doses have since been administered.

Some 29 percent of all Americans have now received at least one dose, and 16 percent have received both doses, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“[The results] suggest that children are particularly well protected by vaccination, which is very encouraging given the trends we have seen in recent weeks regarding the spread of the [British] variant,” BioNTech founder and CEO Ugur Sahin said in a statement.

BioNTech has partnered with Pfizer to develop the Coronavirus vaccination.
