CLEVELAND, OH- Off-duty Cleveland police officer Shane Bartek, 25 fell victim to the crime wave that has befallen the country over the past 18 months, shot to death in a carjacking last week.

Fox News reports that in response to the officer’s death, Cuyahoga County, Ohio prosecutor Michael O’Malley has described the spate of carjackings in the Cleveland area as “war” on the community.

“These carjackers have declared war on our community,” O’Malley said, in response to Bartek’s shooting. “…and this community and law enforcement need to come together to put an end to this violence. These carjackings are happening almost every day throughout this county.”
