AUCKLAND, New Zealand: A rare penguin wandered some 2,000 miles from Antarctica and has been found in New Zealand.

The penguin, named “Pingu” by locals, is just the third Adelie penguin ever found on New Zealand, whose only habitat is on the Antarctic peninsula some 1,864 miles away.

Harry Singh said that while walking with his wife on the beach at Birdlings Flat, south of Christchurch, they encountered the “exhausted” animal, according to the BBC.

Singh called rescuers, who revived Pingu and plan to later release him on a dog-free beach.
