Marathon loser of House speaker votes Kevin McCarthy told CNN shortly after the 13th ballot — in which he finally had the most votes but still did not get the majority — that he thinks 14 will be his lucky number.
“Mr. McCarthy, do you think you have the votes to be elected Speaker tonight?” asked Manu Raju as McCarthy was leaving the chamber Friday afternoon.
“Yes,” said McCarthy.
“You do?” asked Raju.
“Yes,” McCarthy said again.
The tiny CNN reporter asked about flipping certain votes McCarthy’s way, and the would-be Speaker replied, “I’ll have the votes.”
