Russia’s Roscosmos space agency has revealed the primary cause behind the failure of the Luna-25 Moon mission. Yury Borisov, the head of Roscosmos, explained that the probe’s engines failed to shut off in time, causing it to deviate from its intended orbit. Instead of running for the planned 84 seconds, the engines operated for 127 seconds based on a time stamp, leading to the mission’s downfall. A dedicated commission has been established to investigate the incident further.

Borisov stated that the abnormal propulsion system operation resulted in the spacecraft entering an open lunar orbit and ultimately crashing into the Moon’s surface. Despite this setback, he emphasized that the engineering team gained valuable experience during the construction of Luna-25. Acknowledging the mistakes made during the mission, Borisov expressed hope for the success of future Luna missions, including Luna-26, 27, and 28.

Luna-25 had aimed to achieve a landing near the lunar south pole, a region known for its challenging terrain. This departure from previous equatorial landings represented an ambitious endeavor. The Russian spacecraft managed to reach lunar orbit and transmitted high-resolution images of the Moon before its mission’s failure. Originally slated to attempt a lunar landing on August 21, the mission’s achievements and setbacks will likely contribute to the refinement of future lunar exploration efforts.
