KIEV, Ukraine: Several hundred retired Ukrainian police officers gathered outside the Ukrainian parliament on Wednesday, demanding increases in their pensions.

At one point, the retired officers attempted to storm the parliament building, but were held back by security forces.
The demonstrators broke through barriers and approached the parliament, which was in session, before being pushed back. Later, protestors blocked a street and demonstrated in front of a government building.

The retired policemen gathered following the resignation of long-serving Interior Minister Arsen Avakov. No explanation has been issued as to why he resigned suddenly.

Avakov had been in charge of the nation’s police force since 2014.
