At least three people have been killed in an attack in the central Israeli city of Elad today, health officials said.
Police said they suspect it was a militant attack and that the assailant fled in a vehicle. Security forces set up roadblocks in the area around where the killings occurred, and a helicopter could be seen hovering over the area.

One of the assailants was said to have been carrying an ax, although this has yet to be confirmed by police.
Elad’s mayor, speaking on television, called on residents to stay indoors while security forces were still operating.
The Magen David Adom emergency service said three people were killed and four others were wounded; two of the wounded were in serious condition.
The Palestinian militant group Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, praised the attack and linked it to violence at a holy site in Jerusalem, but did not claim responsibility for it.
‘The storming of Al-Aqsa Mosque can’t go unpunished,’ Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem said. ‘The heroic operation in Tel Aviv is a practical translation of what the resistance had warned against.’
Israel marked its Independence Day on Thursday, a festive national holiday in which people typically hold barbecues and attend air shows.
The Magen David Adom ambulance service said three people were killed and two others seriously wounded.
There have been a spate of Arab street attacks in Israel in recent weeks.
Prior to today’s incident in Elad, attacks in Israel and the West Bank by pro-Palestine forces have seen 15 people killed, including three police officers and a security guard – while civilians have also been targeted.
Israel has responded with arrest raids in Palestinian towns and villages which have often sparked clashes and brought the number of Palestinians killed by Israeli forces since the beginning of the year to at least 40.
The casualties include armed members of militant groups, lone assailants and bystanders.
