A statement released from President Donald Trump questions who shot unarmed veteran Ashli Babbitt during the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
In a brief message Thursday by Trump’s Save America coalition, the 45th president asks what many Trump supporters have been attempting to get to the bottom of for months.
“Who shot Ashli Babbitt?” the president’s statement asks.
Babbitt was shot by an unknown Capitol police officer on Jan. 6 as she attempted to crawl through a smashed window into the Speaker’s Chamber inside the US Capitol.
Trump joins a chorus of Republicans who have urged the Department of Justice to release the identity of the Capitol officer who was responsible for Babbitt’s death, which was ruled a homicide by a DC medical examiner.
The officer, however, never faced charges as a Justice Dept. investigation determined the fatal shooting was done in self-defense.
Trump’s statement came as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced appointments to her Jan. 6 investigative commission.
Most notably, Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) in the past few months has interrogated FBI Director Christopher Wray and former acting US Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen seeking to identify the officer who murdered Babbitt.
