The US government, through the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), is making a concerted effort to accelerate the adoption of digital IDs on mobile devices. Recognizing the urgency surrounding digital ID implementation, NIST invites individuals and organizations with expertise in the field to participate in a public-private partnership to develop reference infrastructure and standards.

NIST’s project, overseen by the National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence, emphasizes speed and prioritizes privacy and security. They aim to create a digital ID ecosystem that is efficient, protective of user data, and accessible to a wide range of individuals.

In response to criticism surrounding digital IDs, NIST strives to balance addressing privacy and security concerns while promoting ease of adoption. They understand that convenience plays a significant role in encouraging widespread adoption.

NIST attributes the slower adoption rate to cybersecurity challenges, which have hindered the progress of digital IDs. To combat this, they focus on creating centralized international standards, aligning with similar efforts worldwide.

The European Union has also recognized the need for streamlined standards in the digital ID space, recently publishing a report to assist companies in navigating the complex landscape. This reflects the global nature of the challenge, with entities like HSBC and Barclays collaborating with the EU on cross-border banking standards as early as 2017.

As part of the US initiative, interested parties must submit letters of interest demonstrating their support for three mobile driver’s license standards: ISO/IEC, 18013-5, and 18013-7. The submission deadline is September 28, highlighting the pressing need to move swiftly in digital ID adoption. The collaboration between the government and private sector experts aims to pave the way for a more secure and convenient digital ID future in the United States.
