Illinois Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin got brutally honest on Wednesday when asked about Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s socialist Green New Deal.
During an interview on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” the Illinois Democrat said he read it several times and still doesn’t even know what the legislation wants or will do.
Durbin was asked if he would vote for the bill after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced last week that he will be bringing the legislation to the Senate floor for a vote.
The Illinois Democrat said he has read the legislation several times, but still does not know “what in the heck” it is.
“At this point, I can’t tell you. I have read it and I have reread it. And I asked Ed Markey, what in the heck is this?” he said, referring to his Democratic colleague from Massachusetts who co-sponsored the bill with Ocasio-Cortez.
“He says, ‘It is an aspiration.’ It’s a resolution aspiration,” Durbin said.
“What we’re going to do is ask the Republican leader, ‘What’s your position on global warming,’ while we’re at it. Shouldn’t you come out on the record and say if human activity is having an impact on the environment? Let’s get on the record on both sides,” Durbin said.
When grilled over whether he will vote in favor of the Green New Deal, Durbin responded by saying he was still looking at the legislation.
“It’s long,” he said, dodging the question.
Durbin is one of the top Democrats in Congress, so his refusal to support the Green New Deal certainly speaks volumes.
POLL: Should Jim Acosta Be BANNED FOR LIFE From The Press Pool?
He was essentially arguing that he supports addressing climate change, but didn’t think the socialist legislation was going to do much of anything to actually address the issue.
But more importantly, Americans will also be furious when they learn just how much Ocasio-Cortez’s socialist measure will cost them.
A new study reveals that the price tag for Green New Deal comes out to $7 trillion.
In fact, a recent study from PJ Media found that the estimated $7 trillion projected cost is painfully low, and that it could actually cost nearly $50 trillion, which would be roughly seven — SEVEN — times more than that.
The “Green New Deal” will cost approximately $49.109 trillion in the first ten years, enough to fund Trump’s border wall 8,616 times over. The president is requesting $5.7 billion for the wall.
Ocasio-Cortez has also called for a smart power grid to replace the U.S. power grid, an estimated cost of $338 billion on the low-end ($476 billion on the high-end), according to the Electric Power Research Institute. This kind of transition may be a good idea in general, but it drives up the cost of the “Green New Deal.”
